Each Sentinel invests more than 200 hours of training before Memorial Day Weekend. Beyond the twenty-one-step cadence, the rifle change, the uniform standard, and memorization of the Sentinel’s Creed, training builds the fitness, character, and leadership the watch demands.
Training sessions are scheduled throughout the year leading up to Memorial Day. The team coordinates schedules with each season.
The program is operated by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and is supported through donations. There is no fee to participate; Sentinels provide only their own khakis and shoes.
The vigil typically runs over Memorial Day Weekend from Saturday at 1 p.m. through Monday at 4 p.m. at Floral Haven Cemetery in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
