Avenue of Flags

The Avenue

A corridor of flags lining the grounds of Floral Haven — each one a name, each one remembered.

A Living Tribute

A Personal Tribute, Rooted in Community

The Avenue of Flags is a Memorial Day tradition of Floral Haven Cemetery. Each year, its grounds are lined with the flags of the fallen — an avenue walked by families, visitors, and veterans alike.

The tradition began with a single request: a widow who asked that her husband’s casket flag be flown above the grounds where he was laid to rest. Decades on, that one flag has grown into a display of more than five thousand veteran casket flags.

It is not a generic display. Every flag along the avenue carries the name of the veteran it honors — and for the families who walk among them, the remembrance is personal, and deeply felt.

The Weekend

Three Days of Remembrance

The Avenue of Flags is more than a display. Across the weekend it is raised, kept, and retired through a series of solemn observances.

The Raising of the Colors

On the Friday morning of Memorial Day Weekend, JROTC cadets, Floral Haven staff, and family members gather to raise the avenue — thousands of casket flags lifted across the grounds, one by one.

A morning ceremony that sets the weekend’s observances in motion.

The Tomb Re-enactment

Youth on Guard Memorial Foundation’s Sentinels keep a continuous re-enactment of the Changing of the Guard — the same solemn ritual performed at Arlington National Cemetery, carried out here in Oklahoma, day and night.

Performed every half-hour by day, every hour through the night.

The Reading of the Honor Roll

Through the weekend, the names of every veteran laid to rest at Floral Haven over the past year are read aloud and carried across the grounds from the Veterans Field Carillon Tower.

Followed by a national moment of silence on Monday afternoon.
