A Walking Honor, Every Memorial Day Weekend

Flag Patrol is the moving partner to the Tomb’s vigil — a continuous tending of the Avenue of Flags that lines the grounds of Floral Haven each Memorial Day Weekend.

Throughout the weekend, volunteers walk the route. Flags are righted in the wind and secured. Each is checked, each is tended, and each is upheld with the same reverence with which it was raised.

What the Patrol Does

The Line Is Kept

Volunteers on Flag Patrol carry out two duties throughout the weekend:

  • Right the flags. Wind, weather, and visitors disturb the field of flags. The patrol restores each as needed.
  • Secure the mounts. Poles are checked and hardware tightened or replaced.

The patrol is a quiet act of service, carried out in rotation across the grounds. Many volunteers return year after year to stand with the Foundation in remembrance.
